Songs without Sound

I have a few questions for you to consider...

  • Have you ever sung songs you learned in church during the week, when you are alone, when your only audience is God?
  • Have you ever really meditated on the words that you are singing? Sometimes, reciting a song as if it was a poem, without the notes, gives a special insight as it allows us to focus on the actual words.

Ultimately, of course, the real words of strength that we should rely on are in the Word of God.

Songs, however, make a great additional weapon in our arsenal, in our struggle against The Adversary. Remember that his role in Heaven before being cast out was that of worship leader. Are you struggling with temptation or adversity? Sing! To him it will be like you're dragging your fingernails across a chalkboard, and he'll flee from you.

A particular song has stuck in my brain for the past few days, and I wanted to share it here. You probably know it already. Don't sing along just yet, though. Just read (out loud, even) and let the words refresh you...

God is the fountain whence ten thousand blessings flow
To Him my life, my health, my friends, and every good I owe

The comforts He affords are neither few nor small
He is the source of fresh delights, my portion and my all

He fills my heart with joy; my lips attunes for praise
And to His glory I'll devote the remnant of my days

Inspired by Psalms 84:11
